In the morning the sun has just come up. The Red Umbrella Girl's shadow is long — much taller than she is.

She walks, her shadow walks; she jumps, her shadow jumps. Her shadow follows her everywhere; she cannot shake it off.

Why are there shadows? Because light travels in straight lines, and she blocks it. The patch the light cannot reach — that is a shadow.

When the sun is on this side, the shadow is on that side. A shadow is always opposite the sun.
