The Power Goes Out · Se fue la luz
1The Power Goes Out
Se fue la luz
2Mom, it's so dark! The power went out! Don't be scared. I'm right here. I'll get the flashlight.
¡Mamá, está muy oscuro! ¡Se fue la luz! No tengas miedo, aquí estoy. Voy por la linterna.
3Should we light a candle? No candles — candles can start a fire. A flashlight is safer.
¿Prendemos una vela? Nada de velas, pueden causar un incendio. La linterna es más segura.
4The power company says the whole area is out. The power won't come back until tomorrow morning. Will the food in the fridge go bad?
5Don't open the fridge. With the door closed, the fridge stays cold for four hours, and the freezer for two days.
6María, my place is so cold. I want to bring my grill inside to keep warm. No, never! You can't use a grill or a generator inside. They make carbon monoxide — it can kill you!
María, en mi casa hace mucho frío. Quiero meter el asador para calentarme. ¡No, nunca!
7I didn't know. Thank you for telling me. Stay at our place tonight. Put on a few more layers and use a thick blanket, and you won't be cold.
No sabía.
8My phone is almost dead. I'll charge it in the car. Why not in the garage? Running a car in a closed garage makes carbon monoxide, too. The car has to be outside.
9The power's back! The power's back! Thank you for taking care of me all night. That's what neighbors are for.
¡Regresó la luz! ¡Regresó la luz! Gracias por cuidarme toda la noche. Para eso son los vecinos.
10Good to know: when the power goes out, use flashlights, not candles. Keep the fridge closed: it stays cold for about four hours, and a full freezer for about two days. If you see a fallen power line, stay away and call 911. Never use a generator, a grill, or charcoal inside your home or garage. Keep a generator outside, far from windows. Put a carbon monoxide alarm in your home. If you feel dizzy, sick, or very sleepy, get outside right away and call 911.
