Wei, what's wrong? Medi-Cal sent me a letter. It says I have to report eighty hours of work every month.

It rained so much this month, the job site was closed for days. I'm afraid I won't have eighty hours, and I'll lose my insurance. Don't worry. Let's look at it together.

Vamos a verlo juntos.

Did you keep all your pay stubs? They're all in this shoebox. Great! Pay stubs are your proof.

¿Guardó todos sus talones de pago? Están todos en esta caja de zapatos. ¡Qué bien! Los talones de pago son su comprobante.

This month you worked sixty hours. See? I'm twenty hours short…

Este mes trabajó sesenta horas. ¿Ve? Me faltan veinte horas…

Wait. The letter says if you earn enough in a month, that counts, too. It's about five hundred eighty dollars. I made over two thousand this month! Then you're fine.

Espere.

I thought only work hours counted. School, training, and volunteering count, too. Your Saturdays at the food bank can count.

You've been talking a long time. Have some tea. Thank you, Mrs. Chen! You help people, and I make you tea.

Put each month's pay stubs in one envelope. When it's time to report, they're ready. Okay! From now on, one envelope a month.

Good to know: starting in 2027, many adults ages 19 to 64 on Medicaid must report 80 hours a month of work, school, training, or volunteering — and these can be added together. Earning enough in a month (about $580 or more) can count, too. Keep every month's pay stubs. Your county will tell you when and how to report. Rules are different in each state — call your county office to check.
