The Fake Government Call

La llamada falsa del gobierno

2

This is the IRS. You owe three thousand dollars in taxes. What? I file my taxes on time every year! If you don't pay today, the police will come and arrest you.

3

Who's on the phone? You've gone pale. Don't hang up, and don't tell anyone. Go to a store right now and buy gift cards. I… I'll go right now.

Yo… voy ahora mismo.

4

Buy six cards, five hundred dollars each. Hurry up! Okay, okay, I'm buying them.

5

Wei? What are you buying so many gift cards for? The IRS says I owe taxes. I have to pay with gift cards.

¿Wei? ¿Para qué compras tantas tarjetas de regalo? El IRS dice que debo impuestos. Tengo que pagar con tarjetas de regalo.

6

Wait! The IRS never asks for gift cards. It's a scam! Hang up the phone. Right now.

¡Espera! El IRS nunca pide tarjetas de regalo. ¡Es una estafa! Cuelga el teléfono. Ahora mismo.

7

He said the police were coming to arrest me… I was so scared. Scammers want you scared and in a hurry. The real IRS sends you a letter first.

Dijo que la policía venía a arrestarme… Me asusté mucho.

8

I found the real phone number on the IRS website and called them myself. You don't owe any taxes. We never call asking for gift cards, and we don't send the police to arrest people. Thank goodness! Good thing María was there.

Usted no debe impuestos.

9

If someone calls saying you owe money and tells you to buy gift cards, hang up right away! I got a call like that last month too! They said it was immigration.

10

The real government (the IRS, immigration, Social Security) sends you a letter first. It won't call to scare you with arrest, and it won't ask you to pay with gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency. If you get a call like this: hang up, find the phone number on the official website and call them yourself, and tell your family and friends. You can also report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
