After the Scam

Después de la estafa

This is your bank's fraud department. Someone is using your card to buy things. We just sent a code to your phone. Please read it to me, and we'll freeze your card right away. Okay, thank you. The code is…

Bueno, gracias. El código es…

Twelve hundred dollars? I didn't buy any of this! That call… wasn't from the bank. I got scammed.

¿Mil doscientos dólares? ¡Yo no compré nada de esto! Esa llamada… no era del banco. Me estafaron.

4

Luis, what's wrong? I got scammed out of twelve hundred dollars. I'm so stupid. I didn't want to tell anyone.

Luis, ¿qué te pasa? Me estafaron mil doscientos dólares. Soy un tonto. No quería decírselo a nadie.

5

You're not stupid. Scammers are very good at tricking people. Anyone can be fooled. I almost got scammed last month too. Me too! It's better to say it out loud.

No eres tonto.

6

Right now the most important thing is to be fast. Call the number on the back of your card right away. The number on the back of the card… Okay, I'll call right now.

Bueno, llamo ahora mismo.

7

We've frozen your card and we'll mail you a new one. These purchases weren't yours, so we'll investigate. Yesterday I read a code to him… A real bank will never call and ask you to read that code. From now on, don't give it to anyone who asks.

8

We can help you get back the money you lost. First pay a three-hundred-dollar fee. Scammers again! Real help doesn't ask for money first.

9

The bank gave me back the twelve hundred dollars! Because I reported it fast. Thank you all. If I had kept it to myself, I'd never have gotten the money back.

If you've been scammed, don't be ashamed. The faster the better: call the number on the back of your card right away and freeze it; change your passwords; then report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, or to the police. Watch out for a second scam: anyone who says they can get your money back but wants you to pay first is a scammer too. Tell your family and friends. Saying it out loud helps keep others from being scammed.

Si te estafaron, no te dé vergüenza. Cuéntaselo a tu familia y amigos.
