Wáng Lì: Mark, this is my old classmate Zhāng Wěi.

Zhāng Wěi: Hi! Wáng Lì tells me you love Chinese food.

Me: Yes, I really love Chinese food! Nice to meet you.

Yo: ¡Sí, me encanta la comida china! Mucho gusto.

3

Zhāng Wěi: Can you handle spicy food?

Zhāng Wěi: ¿Puedes comer picante?

Me: I can handle a little spicy.

Yo: Puedo comer un poco de picante.

Wáng Lì: Then let's order a few dishes that aren't too spicy.

Wáng Lì: Entonces pidamos algunos platos no muy picantes.

4

Wáng Lì: Here comes the food! Mark, you try first.

Wáng Lì: ¡Ya llegó la comida! Mark, pruebe usted primero.

Me: OK — let's all dig in!

Yo: ¡Bueno, comamos todos!

5

Zhāng Wěi: Come on, cheers!

Zhāng Wěi: ¡Venga, salud!

Me: Cheers!

Yo: ¡Salud!

6

Me: Wáng Lì, a toast to you. Thank you for helping me learn Chinese!

Yo: Wáng Lì, brindo por usted. ¡Gracias por ayudarme con el chino!

Wáng Lì: You're welcome! And thank you for teaching me English.

Wáng Lì: ¡De nada! Y gracias a usted por enseñarme inglés.

7

Zhāng Wěi: Mark, I'll drain mine — you drink as much as you like!

Me: What does "suíyì" mean?

Yo: ¿Qué significa "suíyì"?

Wáng Lì: It means drink as much or as little as you want.

Me: Waiter, the bill please!

Yo: ¡Mesero, la cuenta, por favor!

Zhāng Wěi: No, no — tonight's on me!

Zhāng Wěi: ¡No, no, hoy invito yo!

Wáng Lì: Stop fighting over it — I already paid!

Me: Next time it's my treat!

Yo: ¡La próxima vez invito yo!

Zhāng Wěi: Deal — it's a promise!

Zhāng Wěi: ¡Trato hecho!

10

Good to know: Chinese friends often fight over the bill — it's both politeness and warmth.

If someone says "I'll drain mine, you drink as you like", a small sip is fine.
